Description
This is a painting from a series of paintings I did about my father, a jazz musician, who died from dementia. Throughout the series, I use the elephant as a symbol for dementia. I was visiting my dad one day in his dementia care facility, and he was really distant and quiet that day, as words were starting to disappear for him. I took him for a walk and then sat with him on a bench. I said to him, "I don't want you to forget me, Daddy," and started crying. He started singing, "Que sera sera, whatever will be, will be." Even when he couldn't speak, he could sing, right up until the end. I learned to be present and not worry about what was coming in those moments, and looked for times when we could just sit and sing and be together. This painting is featured in my book, Fractured Memories: Because Demented People Need Love, Too. It chronicles my family's heartbreaking and hilarious journey through my dad's dementia and includes 40 paintings. You can purchase it at http://shop.emilypageart.com/products/fractured-memories or on Amazon.
