Description
This is a painting from a series of paintings I did about my father, a jazz musician, who died from dementia. Throughout the series, I use the elephant as a symbol for dementia. The sheet music is to Come Rain or Come Shine, and the words in the background are Dr. Seuss': "I meant what I said and I said what I meant, an elephant's faithful one hundred percent." A lot of people disappeared from my dad's life following his diagnosis, perhaps because he was so young and it reminded friends of their own mortality. But I decided early on that I would be there through all of it, no matter how bad it got. And I was. No regrets. This painting is featured in my book, Fractured Memories: Because Demented People Need Love, Too. It chronicles my family's heartbreaking and hilarious journey through my dad's dementia and includes 40 paintings.
